Notes from an examiner...

A few words from one of our well respected examiners

If you are reading this it means that you are thinking of taking, or are ready to take your advanced driving test.  The main thing to remember is, it is you who put yourself forward for the advanced driving test; so enjoy it.

Having completed the training, the day of the test will come.  Firstly, be aware of the location where you are to meet the examiner.  Visit the area if you are not sure.  Make sure your vehicle is clean and tidy, including windows inside and out.  First impressions are very important.  All documents should be in order, as these will be checked on the day.

What am I looking for on the test you may ask?   I appreciate that everybody will be nervous.  Easy to say try and relax, but it is important.  Errors are caused by nerves and at the end of the day you have put yourself forward for the test so enjoy it.  Examiners are only human and we do take account of nerves, although if they do get the better of you there is nothing we can do.

On the actual test itself, I’m looking for a confident drive demonstrating a good understanding of the System of Car Control.  The key is good observation.  The earlier you see something the more time you have to react to it.  Progress needs to be made when safe, but still dealing with all hazards in the appropriate manner.  This doesn’t mean driving as fast as you can, but keeping positive when safe and speed allows.  Too many candidates fall off of the pace on the open road, being content to follow traffic rather than looking to make progress.  If it’s not safe to overtake we don’t do it, but keep looking.  It is good to be able to do a reasonable commentary.  This is not compulsory, but gives the examiner an idea of where you are looking, what you are seeing and how you are planning to deal with the hazards encountered.  Remember if your drive would not pass the DSA driving test, is it right it should pass an advanced test?

Slow manoeuvring is also a requirement, being a parking exercise or a reverse on the road somewhere.  This is something many people do not think of, but it does need practise.  Also a sound knowledge of the Highway Code is important, as you will be asked some questions on it, either during or at the end of the test.

Having completed the test successfully you should be rightly proud of what you have achieved and you can then display the IAM logo on your vehicle.   Don’t forget, advanced driving does not stop there.  I think that having achieved that level, it’s just as important that you maintain it.

Good Luck on your test, it may be me doing it.

Phil Pentelow
IAM Examiner.
