Q1: What is the main advantage of Advanced Driving?
Ans: Advanced driving is safer driving by responding before an event, not reacting after it. After passing the Advanced Test, an IAM member has a 50-70% better accident record than the average driver (Transport Research Laboratory figures).
Q2: What do I have to do?
Ans: Enrol for the IAM’s Skill for Life programme, which is run through local volunteer groups such as ourselves. We will then guide you through the steps leading to the test.

Q3: How does it work?
Ans: Everything is centred on the 5 phases of the “System of Car Control” which is shown below. Your aim is for smooth and skilful use of the controls through concentration, hazard awareness and anticipation.
Do you recognise yourself in any of the following situations?
- Signals (Information) – Are they correct, at the right time, of the right duration?
- Braking (Speed) – Is it smooth and progressive or late and fierce?
- Gear changing (Gear) – Is it the correct gear, is it smooth and well timed?
These are just a few of the topics we will cover with you as you work your way through the Skill for Life programme.
Q4: Is there a free “taster” session?
Ans: Yes with our Introductory Drive. One of the Group’s Observers will take you out on a short 20 minute run. You’ll get a feel for what it’s like to have someone look at your driving again plus a full explanation of what it’s all about. There is no hard sell; it has to be your decision to sign up as success relies heavily on self-motivation if you are to improve your driving standard.
Q5: Where, when and a contact?
Ans: Southampton Solent University, East Park Terrace, SO14 OYN (map) on the first Sunday of every month with runs at 9, 10 and 11 o’clock. For further information or to book an Introductory Drive please leave a brief message for Rob Kelley on 07890 674 126 or contact him here.
Q6: What if I want to sign up for the Skill for Life package without the Introductory Drive?
Ans: You can follow the link to the Institute of Advanced Motorists or we can do it for you on the Sunday morning. Please refer to Q5 above for contact details.
Q7: What can I expect on the day of the Test
Ans: You will drive for about 90 minutes on all types of road, accompanied by an IAM appointed examiner. For a first hand account of the Test from one of our examiners please click here.
